Flying the GB flag, the extremely talented Kate Winslet’s dreams are all coming true so far this year. She won Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Reader‘ at The Critics Choice Awards, then got a double-whammy at the Golden Globes, bringing home the gold in both ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama’ for Revolutionary Road and ‘Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role’ for The Reader.
Now then, is it naughty to say we secretly loved the fact that, in her speech she completely forgot about Angelina Jolie? It’s not that we don’t rate Miss Jolie, without a doubt she is a brilliant and graceful actress, we just love how British women all turn into blubbering Bridget Jones’ when overwhelmed with emotion and adrenaline!

The BAFTA nominations were also announced last week and Kate Winslet continued her seemingly unstoppable run towards her first Oscar - where she was nominated for ‘Leading Actress’ twice, for her two roles in Revolutionary Road and The Reader.
Orange British Academy Film Awards taking place on Sunday 8 February 2009.
Now finally the Oscar nominations are out and unsurprisingly she has only been nominated for one award - Actress In A Leading Role: The Reader. After missing out on five previous occasions, she said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair:
“Do I want it? You bet your ****ing *** I do! I think that people assume that I don’t care or don’t want it or don’t need it or something.
“It’s hard to be there five times and I’m only human, you know? But I don’t go home and cry, because we’re all grown-ups here.”
I’m not being funny, but after the Golden Globe tear-jerking speech (not forgetting the thank you to the make-up artist), could you imagine the speech if the Oscar’s show the British lady some love after all these years?
Pause for thought: there has to be a little disappointment that Leo DiCaprio has STILL NOT been nominated for an Oscar. After playing every character under the sun and being outstanding in each one, what more does he have to do? Play an African-American - Barak Obama in his life story perhaps?!! I digress.
So, the other big British frontrunner is Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle’s Bollywood indie smash about a young slumdog who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? In an unprecedented fortnight, Slumdog Millionaire has won four prestigious Golden Globe awards, been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards, had a record breaking 47% increase in box office in its second week on release and still retains the number one spot at the UK Box Office having now taken £7, 041, 524 in its first 13 days of release.
Only fair then that it’s received 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
“It’s just amazing. For Slumdog Millionaire to be included in the nominations for the Oscars is a huge honour. When we first began working on the film I don’t think any of us ever imagined that we might end up attending the Oscars ceremony as a result. I’m just so proud to be a part of this project and I have been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the film. Thank you to everyone who has supported us. I truly feel blessed” - Dev Patel
