On Nov. 6, the long-awaited film, Free Tibet, will premiere in New York at a special VIP screening hosted by fashion designer Anna Sui, the Milarepa Fund and Capitol Records, among others. |
The feature-length film, directed by Sara Pirozek and executive produced by Jay Faires and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, chronicles the 1996 Tibetan Freedom Concert and features performances by Beck, Bjork, the Foo Fighters, the Smashing Pumpkins and Yoko Ono, as well as an appearance by the Dalai Lama himself.
Free Tibet also outlines the history of the region and the struggle of the Tibetan people against oppression and persecution by the Chinese government. In 1959, the Tibetan government was overthrown by Communist Chinese soldiers and since that time an estimated million Tibetans have been killed at the hands of the Chinese.
A triple CD set, titled Tibetan Freedom Concert, will be released on Nov. 4 (as reported in JAMTV on Sept. 10) in conjunction with the movie. (Christina Cramer)
