When drum 'n' bass went completely over to the dark side between 1998 and 2001, one man stood strong against the tide: Fabio. The BBC Radio 1 DJ kept plugging a funkier drum 'n' bass sound, being made by the likes of EZ Rollers, and soon his Swerve night in London became the home of liquid funk. Jazzy drum 'n' bass is nothing new: LTJ Bukem's Logical Progression series pioneered that flava in the mid-1990s, but that kind of "intelligent" d 'n' b was more of a home listening thing -- liquid funk is much punchier and dancefloor-oriented. Young punks like High Contrast and Calibre now rule the roost with their cutting edge productions.
