Exclusive Stream: Frank Zappa's "Lonely Little Girl" Single

Deemed too weird for the radio in 1968, check out this song from the new Zappa box set "Lumpy Money"

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention: "Lonely Little Girl"

For the first time in 40 years, fans of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention will be able to hear the group's classic 1968 albums Lumpy Gravy and We're Only In It For the Money the way Zappa originally intended, thanks to the new three-disc set Lumpy MoneyRolling Stone's David Fricke, who penned Lumpy Money's extensive liner notes, writes, "Four decades later, they remain two of the most important and prophetic albums Frank Zappa ever made, extraordinary in their depth and daring, unflinching in their journalism and judgment."

The collection boasts two versions of each album, the 1968 mono edits (including the original, unreleased-on-CD version of Lumpy Gravy) and the 1984 remixes that boasted new rhythm tracks. Making the package even more enticing is a third disc loaded with instrumentals, song fragments and unreleased tracks, including the single version of Money's "Lonely Little Girl," which you can exclusively stream above.

Ranked number 296 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, We're Only In It For The Money faced censorship issues from the onset, from its Sgt. Pepper-mocking artwork to forced edits of roughly a quarter of the album's 19 tracks due to salty language. Now, for the first time, the Zappa family has reissued the album in its original, un-edited, mono state. Additionally, Lumpy Gravy, which Zappa claimed was one of his greatest works, features the original 22-minute orchestral mix that was never released due to a record company dispute.

"Money is, in fact, breathtakingly concise music: 20 compact tracks, rigorously arranged and zooming by without pause," Fricke writes, adding that on Gravy, "The colors and rhythm action comes fast and furious." In the meantime, enjoy the internet debut of "Lonely Little Girl — The Single," an oddball single choice that doubles the length of the version featured on Money.
