So long 2008, hello 2009. And into this brave new era will float bright new musical acts, all of who will have that new artist smell about them. Some you’ll love, some you’ll shrug about, but have no doubt if you’ve got your ears open wide enough, this lot will be sliding inside them at some point in the next 12 months. Here’s a few artists that RealMusic Blog reckons you should look out for this year…
Lady GaGa
Pictured above, she’s got a regal name, big hair and she’s already been compared to Madonna - if New Yorker Lady GaGa doesn’t have star stamped all over her, we don’t know who does. She’s supporting the Pussycat Dolls right now, has a Grammy nomination in the bag and her debut album The Fame is due out on January 12.
The Days
The Devon four-piece are hitmakers in waiting and spent 2008 touring with Scouting For Girls and Elliot Minor, among others. Piano-led pop, the surf dudes are polite, radio-friendly and were spotted by the same label who discovered Coldplay and Keane. They’ve also got a sense of humour, as evidenced by their tongue-in-cheek cover of Usher’s Love In This Club - watch it here. Their debut single No Ties is out on January 26, their album Atlantic Skies in March.
Laura Izibor
The Irish songstress is already a star in her homeland and she spent last year gigging the UK in the process sharpening her impressive soul sound. She’s booked to support Aretha Franklin this year, opened for Estelle last year and has already had a track featured in Grey’s Anatomy.
Gary Go
Great alliterative name and funky glasses that show he means business, Gary Go is racing with the piano-playing bloke baton this year. His songs are heartfelt and being that he’s not called James, Gary should stand out from the Morrison/Blunt melee.
Frankmusik
His album Complete Me isn’t due out till June, but Croydon native Vincent Frank is being touted for big things this year. He’s already mixed things up for the likes of Keane, Radiohead, Mika and CSS and his retro-electro vibe is enchanting.
Little Boots
Breathy electro-pop from Blackpool native Victoria Hesketh who last year appeared on Jools Holland and has already collaborated with Hot Chip. She’s beginning 2009 supporting The Ting Tings in Europe - hot tip of 2009 supporting hot tip of 2008 you might say.
