The popular music charts are all well and good, but there’s nothing RealMusic Blog looks forward to in the calendar more than the Eurovision Song Contest. Filled with everything that Europe has to offer and then some, this annual jamboree never fails to raise a smile at our house, as we pass round the cheese & pineapple on sticks, gulp down the Babycham and wait patiently while Margit from Estonia gallops to glory on the back of a thumping 70s-esque anthem, wearing what looks like a baby blue catsuit with feathers. If that actually happens this year, this may be RealMusic Blog’s last entry before running off to become a medium…
The 53rd year of the Eurovision - being staged in stag-night central, Serbia’s Belgrade - promises to be just as entertainment-filled, with our predictions being that Ireland’s entry will be a turkey (boom boom!); Germany will be manic once more; Russia will again try a touch too much; and the French will stage their next revolution when they hear their fella singing in English for the very first time. For shame…
For 2008, the British public shunned such talent as Michelle Gayle and a couple of reality TV losers, plumping instead for Andy Abraham, the loveable shiny-headed ex-binman who was pipped to the X Factor post by Shayne Ward. Not only did Andy pen the tune himself, he also has a collection of reflective shirts to die for. Check out the video below to witness his fancy footwork - if that doesn’t win over the people of Moldova and Malta, we’re at a loss to know what will.

As well as Andy’s performance, this year RealMusic Blog is also chattering with excitement about the French entry. Le Francais have voted for uber-cool Sebastien Tellier to represent them, and he does so in some style, dressing in an ice cream suit avec le beard, le cigarette and le lovelies. Take a look for youself - c’est magnifique!

RealMusic Blog wishes Andy and Seb the best of luck - Andy more than Seb obviously, unless you’re reading our EU edition, in which case, we’re spreading the Euro-love in equal measure. But so long as Terry Wogan’s there throughout, the cheese fondue stays piping hot and we don’t run out of Lambrini, we’re going to have a cracking night of it.
The Eurovision Song Contest will be beamed to your TV live from Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday May 24th. If you make any other plans, other people will know and they will tut. For more: www.eurovision.tv/
