The Ting Tings

Music > The Ting Tings

Fame well and truly draped itself over The Ting Tings in 2008, getting into every crevice of their lives and giving them massive exposure. Katie White and Jules De Martino's band favour a brand of indie-pop, heavy on the drums, but it wasn't always thus - their previous incarnation as Dear Eskiimo saw them produce a more ethereal sound. However, after they were dropped by their record company, the pair turned into The Ting Tings - named after a waitress that White used to work with.

Cheesed off with the record industry, they started to play their own private gigs, word of mouth built up, and after releasing a few tracks on an independent label, "That's Not My Name" was picked up by iTunes for one of its ads and it was all-systems well and truly go. Soon, large swathes of the country were packed into summer festival tents bouncing around proclaiming that wasn't their name, The Ting Tings had a No.1 album and both seemed fairly bemused at their fast-track ride to fame. "I still think it's weird. I'm overwhelmed but kind of laughing at it in a way - not in a cocky way but just because it's so surreal," comments White.
