Roisin Murphy
Originally hailing from a small town in Southern Ireland, Murphy's family picked up and shipped out to Manchester when she was 12, and she's been England-based ever since. Murphy moved to Sheffield when she was 17 with a view to going to art college. Instead, she met Mark Brydon, asked him if he liked her tight sweater, and in response he invited her to his studio - where Moloko was born. Nine years and four albums later, Murphy emerged into the bright light of day to pursue her solo career, with album Ruby Blue causing a gentle ripple in the music pond. But with 2007's Overpowered, Murphy managed to fuse together disco with electronic dance beats on some outstanding tracks, issuing an album of undisputed beauty and brilliance.
Roisin comments: "When I began collecting my thoughts together and homing in on the influences that I wanted to feed into Overpowered, I told my old friend Parrot about all this old disco and house I'd been listening to and he gave me lists of more tracks he thought I should check out. We did wonder about how all this might fit into the current musical landscape, would anybody be listening? With dance music the way it was, who could be sure? Anyway, it seemed too natural not to go that way."
People were listening, her live shows are legendary and for RealMusic's money, Overpowered was our 2007 record of the year.
