Johnny "Hammond" Smith is a jazz organ player, born in 1933, in Louisville, Kentucky. Originally inspired by legends such as Art Tatum, he started to play piano and organ at an early age. His career as a recording artist started in 1959, with Nancy Wilson. "Hammond" became one of the leading jazz organists alongside Jimmy Smith, and an icon of the 1970s British rare groove movement. "Hammond" Smith remains popular today with DJs and producers, such as Kerri Chandler, who featured "Hammond"'s track "Lost Conquistadores Chocolates" on the album "Excursions 01".
