The Jesus & Mary Chain
Scottish alternative noise rockers the Jesus and the Mary Chain were formed in 1984. The sound of their debut single "Upside Down" made them an instant sensation in the UK, as it mixed formless guitar distortion and sweet bubblegum pop in equal parts. Their audiences got further endeared to them when the band, in a fitting tribute to their heroes the Velvet Underground, turned their backs on them during 20-minute live noise jams. Never quite able to live up to their epochal debut album "Psychocandy", they disbanded after 5 more albums.
