Formed in 1960 in Houston, Texas, The Crusaders consisted of high school-friends pianist Joe Sample, tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper. Joined by trombonist Wayne Henderson, the group moved to LA in 1960 and signed to the Pacific Jazz label enjoying a rich output, fusing jazz and R&B, with a recognizable trombone/tenor frontline as their trademark. In 1979 they released the LP “Street Life”, which was one of their biggest hits, but also marked the last recording of the original lineup. After Hooper’s departure the band gradually faded out.
