Wynton Marsalis

Music > Jazz > Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis was born in 1961 in New Orleans as the son of pianist Ellis Marsalis. In the 80's he made a strong impact, becoming the most dominant trumpet player of the era. His debut recording was with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, which already led to comparisons to the great Miles Davis. After touring and recording with Herbie Hancock he signed with Columbia and assembled his quintet with brother Branford on sax, recording his first classical album. In 1997, his "Blood on the Fields" was the first jazz-based work to win a Pulitzer Prize.
