Woody Shaw
Trumpeter Woody Shaw didn't cut quite as high a profile as his contemporaries Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, but his chops were equally devastating. Like Hubbard, he could play just as comfortably on rootsy Hard Bop melodies, old standards, and raucous Avant Garde blowing sessions. He boasted an incisive, clarion tone and a wide harmonic palette. Leading groups that ranged from quartets to fourteen-piece "concert ensembles," Shaw crafted some of the most lyrical yet challenging jazz music of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.
