The Spencer Davis Group
The R&B/British Invasion act The Spencer Davis Group formed in Birmingham, UK back in 1963. Although led by guitarist Spencer Davis, it was frontman Steve Winwood whose energetic keyboard sounds and grinding voice secured chart successes for the outfit. Their hits included songs such as “Keep On Running”, “Gimme Some Lovin” and “I’m A Man”. Although they enjoyed reasonable chart successes and received lots of praise, Winwood decided to try his hand at leadership and formed the band Traffic in 1967. The Spencer Davis Group soldiered on until 1986, but never reached its erstwhile heights again.
