The Shadows were originally Cliff Richard's backing band, but went out on their own to record their debut in 1960. The band was based around guitarists Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, with a constantly changing rhythm section. Their sound was clean, and even metallic, able to make the simplest melodies haunting. Their greatest success was the hit "Apache," but they also did well with "Man of Mystery" and "Kon-Tiki", and the later chart toppers "Wonderful Land" and "Foot Tapper". The band officially broke up in 1968, but continued to reunite for tours well into the 1990's.
