The Pretenders
Originally from Akron, Ohio, singer Chrissie Hynde formed the Pretenders in London in 1978. Hynde, an invigorating, sexy singer, successfully bent the traditional male roles of rock the way she liked, and created a timeless sound, more power pop than new wave. Their first album, released 1980, reached No.1 in the UK and went Top Ten in the US. After two band members died of drug abuse in '82, the Pretenders became synonymous with Hynde's music. She still had hit singles, such as "Don't Get Me Wrong" (1986), but success remained inconsistent.
