The Boomtown Rats
The former journalist Bob Geldof founded The Boomtown Rats in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland in 1975, taking the name from the novel “Bound for Glory” by the American folk legend Woody Guthrie. Their debut single, “Looking After No. 1” became a smash hit in 1977; their following eight releases were to be equally successful. Today, they are best remembered for the 1979 hit “I Don’t Like Mondays” – a song about a California teenager who had gone on a killing spree, taken from their album “The Fine Art of Surfacing”. In 1984 Geldof co-founded the relief band Band Aid. The Boomtown Rats disbanded in 1986.
