Rufus Wainwright

Music > Alternative/Punk > Rufus Wainwright

You don't have to be a from rich musical stock to be a successful artist, but it doesn't do any harm. With folk singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III for a dad and ditto Kate McGarrigle for a mum, we reckon Rufus's fate was set as soon as he was born. That he had talent in spades was helpful too, with Rufus's unique style of baroque pop lending itself to a fanatical following around the world.
His star was still rising in 2007 following his earlier Want albums, but it was that year's two releases that catapulted him to a more mainstream arena. Release The Stars is a fantastic album, full of Rufus's sultry piano, distinctive vocals and no small helping of lederhosen. And his Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall saw the main man transform into Judy Garland, finally fulfilling his camp destiny.
Never one to sit on his laurels, Wainwright is currently writing his first opera Prima Donna, due to be staged at the Manchester International Festival in 2009.
