Richard X headed the UK's bootleg scene under the alias Girls on Top. He crafted ironic, copyright-busting hybrids of songs by, for example, Whitney Houston and Kraftwerk. It didn't take long for the industry to catch on, particularly since he was quietly working on the inside as a producer. Virgin signed X to dice up their back-catalogue in DJ-friendly legal remixes. "Richard X Presents the X Factor, Vol. 1" came out in 2003, followed by "Back to Mine". Meanwhile, Richard X (real name Richard Philips) produced acts including the Sugababes and remixed songs from Nine Inch Nails to New Order.
