Founded in Athens, GA, USA in 1980, the alternative rock quartet R.E.M. became one of the most popular post-punk bands of the eighties. They released their debut album "Chronic Town" in 1982. 1985's offering "Fables of the Reconstruction" became their first big-time success with over 300,000 copies sold in the USA alone and by 1992, the year they released the hit-studded album "Automatic For the People", their ringing arpeggios, driving drum beats and mumbled, cryptic lyrics were ubiquitous. They have produced best-selling records ever since.
