Ne-yo
Shaffer Chimere Smith isn't quite a pop star name, so we can understand why the Arkansas lad switched it to Ne-Yo, which is way more succinct and catchy. Once that was sorted, it was just a case of coming up with some tunes and he managed that too. Not just for himself either - before having hits himself, Ne-Yo had been crafting them for the likes of Britney, Whitney, Rihanna and Celine Dion, as well as Usher, Leona Lewis and Chris Brown, to name but a few.
However, 2006 was the year the spotlight was turned on Ne-Yo the artist, with his debut album In My Own Words hitting No.1 in the US and going top 20 in the UK. We warmed a little more to his second album Because Of You which reached No.6 the following year, but it was 2008 that truly saw the UK embrace Ne-Yo, with chart-topping singles Closer and Miss Independent and album Year Of The Gentleman. We're not sure about that, but 2008 was certainly the year of Ne-Yo.
