Mylene Farmer

Billed as the French Madonna, Mylène Farmer (born Mylène Jeanne Gautier) moved to France from Montreal, Canada, aged eight. Aged 23, after being discovered by pop svengali Laurant Boutonnat, she made her first recording, "Maman a tort", followed by debut LP Cendres de Lune (1986). The latter went on to shift over a million copies -- as has every one of her albums since -- sparking the singer's rise to becoming France's most successful female recording artist of all time.
As famed for her extravagant and sexually provocative videos as her often erotically charged songs, Farmer has notched up a number of newsworthy moments over her career to date: "Maman a tort" concerned a lesbian relationship with a nurse; "Libertine" features arguably the first nude scene in music video, with Farmer à poil in an 18th century setting; and as late as 2006, the then 45-year-old performed a striptease for "L'Amour n'est rien".
Now resident in California, the singer -- who has consistently refused to perform in English -- has turned her hand to grooming new stars alongside Boutonnat. Cue the appearance of Alizée, who scored a worldwide hit with her debut single, "Moi... Lolita", in 2000.
