With a name like Muggsy, Spanier could have had a side career as a movie gangster if there were Blacksploitation films back in the 1930s. Luckily, his sweet cornet sound -- just to the right of Louis Armstrong -- sailed through the Swing era and continued to thrive in the Traditional Jazz revival scene of the '50s and '60s.
