Matchbox 20's 1996 debut Yourself or Someone Like You heralded the transformation of Grunge from the bratty offshoot of Punk and Metal into a commercially viable pop product aimed at the adult market. Fastidiously distorted guitars and emotionally vulnerable vocals are beefed up with major label glossiness and arena-rock bombast.

Along with Third Eye Blind, Creed and Live, Matchbox 20 heralded the transformation of Grunge. The mid-1990s arrival of Post-Grunge signaled the adjustment to a commercially viable pop product aimed at adults. The name Matchbox 20 was taken from a T-shirt worn by a restaurant patron where drummer Paul Douchette was waiting tables. Lead singer Rob Thomas was an army brat born on a German military base.
