Mamie Smith was born in 1883 in Ohio, USA. In 1920, she put out the song "Crazy Blues" and became famous as the first black woman singer to record a blues song. The song was a huge hit, quickly selling millions of copies and opening up the recording market for other black artists. She went on to make many more recordings during her career, worked with musicians such as Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Dunn and Fats Pichon and appeared in a number of films. A measure of the longevity of her music, her recordings were re-released on CD during the 1980's.
