Madlib

Music > Madlib

A producer/rapper from Oxnard, Calif., Madlib has been making noise since the early '90s, when his group Lootpack began appearing on records by Tha Alkaholiks. Well known for his original beats and obscure jazz-soaked samples, he's worked extensively with Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw Records, where he's released several singles and produced tracks and remixes for much of the roster. Madlib is featured prominently on the Lootpack's acclaimed debut Soundpieces: Da Antidote and his alter-ego Quasimoto released the stellar record The Unseen in 2000. He's also laced tracks for Cali Agents, Declaime, J-88, and Medaphoar. In 2001 Madlib started releasing instrumental jazz under the name Yesterday's New Quintet. Since then he's produced entire albums for Dudley Perkins and Wildchild, collaborated with Jay Dee (ex-Slum Village) for the Champion Sound LP, and reworked choice Blue Note classics on Shades of Blue.
