Bluegrass vocalist Lester Flatt was the founder of one of the most important bluegrass bands of all times, Flatt & Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, which he formed in 1948 with the prolific banjo player Earl Scruggs. The group has expanded the sound of Bill Monroe (with whom both had previously played), popularizing it throughout the world. In 1969 the two launched their own solo careers, with Flatt renaming the Foggy Mountain Boys as the Nashville Grass, and continuing recording with them until his death in 1979. Flatt & Scruggs were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985.
