Leroy Carr, born in Nashville in 1905, caused a big change steering blues music in a different direction. He is a forefather of "urban blues". Producer Francis Smith said of Carr, "he, perhaps more than any other single artist, was responsible for transforming the rural blues patterns of the 20's into the more city-oriented blues of the 30's". Carr moved to Indianapolis as a child, and in 1928 hooked up with guitarist Scrapper Blackwell. They recorded many songs together including "How Long, How Long", "Prison Bound Blues" and "When the Sun Goes Down". Leroy Carr died in 1935 at the age of 30.
