Katerine were formed during the early 1990's. The band was founded by singer and songwriter Phillipe Katerine, who was inspired by British new wave music from the likes of Gang of Four. He was also influenced by soundtrack super heroes such as Michel Legrand and Vladimir Cosma. Katerine were signed by Rosebud Records and released "L'Education Anglaise" in 1994. They issued the subsequent "Mes Mauvaises Frequentations" two years later. Their blend of folk, pop and easy listening went down so well that Katerine signed at Barclay Records, where they released "Les Creatures" in 1999.
