Born on November 23, 1925 in New York, NY, Johnny Mandel was a prolific composer and a jazz musician. In his earlier days as a trombone player he played with such talents as Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey, Buddy Rich and Woody Herman’s Second Herd. In the early 50’s he began making a name for himself as a talented songwriter and consequently moved to LA to write movie scores. Some of his famous tunes included “Suicide Is Painless" (from “Mash”) and “A Time For Love”, as well as numerous arrangemnets for Frank Sinatra and Shirley Horn, amoing others.
