Joan Manuel Serrat was born on December 27, 1943 in Barcelona, Spain. He started to play the guitar at age 17 and had his first radio appearance in 1964. In the same year, he became part of a group of singers fighting for the right to sing in Catalán - the Franco regime had forbidden the use of his native tongue. His debut EP "Una Guitarra" saw release in 1965. His third EP, "Cançó De Matinada" (1967) became the first Catalan record to become a #1 hit in Spain. Serrat went on to become one of the most influential Spanish singer/songwriters.
