Hugh Masekela

The jazz musician Hugh Masekela was born on April 4, 1939 in Wittbank, South Africa. He started his career in music as a member of the Huddleston Jazz Band, but Trevor Huddleston was soon deported because of his open anti-apartheid stance. Masekela left South Africa in 1961. Once in the USA, his career really took off. His African pop/jazz mixture was so successful that he founded his own label, Chisa, in the mid-sixties. His 1968 song “Grazing in the Grass” became a huge hit. He later collaborated with artists such as Fela Kuti and Paul Simon.
