A boxer turned singer, Growling Tiger began his career as a Calypso singer in 1934. Steeped in Trinidad's African, Spanish and French heritages, his baritone-dipping voice carries a quintessential Caribbean lilt. He came to prominence during the golden age of Calypso, when music served as society's telegraph: political commentary, gossip, humorous and risque anecdotes, and social protest were integral elements. The music is a throwback to the Creole music that predates Calypso, employing minor keys and folk instrumentation such as acoustic bass, violin, mandolin-like guitar, percussion and flute. A master of improvisation (extempo) and the competitive Calypsonian duel, Tiger could rhyme on diverse subjects with intelligence and wit. Rappers take heed -- Growling Tiger could school you.
