Goldfrapp
A collaboration between kooky chanteuse Allison Goldfrapp (a former foil of Tricky and Orbital) and soundtrack composer Will Gregory, Goldfrapp's debut 2000 album Felt Mountain was an off-kilter orchestral downtempo smoulderer in the vein of Lamb or Portishead. Black Cherry (2003) was a trashier affair, playing up to the sultry nature of Goldfrapp's impressive warble. Electro-glam stompers such as Train and Strict Machine evoked the decadence of Cabaret-era Berlin, filtered through the sleazy electronics of Soft Cell and Fischerspooner.
2005's Supernature elongated the theatrical bent, inviting feather boas to sashay alongside its stridently dance anthems such as Oh La La, Number 1 and Ride A White Horse. 2008's Seventh Tree saw Goldfrapp stripping back the frippery, going for a more earthy, softer sound. Although a giant step away from what had come before, it still garnered many plaudits from fans and critics alike.
