Extreme
The hard rock/pop band Extreme formed in 1985 around the guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. Their self-titled 1989 debut album won them the respect of the heavy metal world, but their scope was never restrained to the world of fast riffs. In fact, Extreme’s brand of heavy, but sophisticated music drew as much on Van Halen as on the Beatles and jazz, and it was their acoustic ballad “More Than Words” that was to be their biggest hit. However, the audiences soon weren’t ready to follow their sometimes over-ambitious flights of fancy anymore, and Extreme disbanded in 1996 after falling record sales.
