Estelle

Music > Estelle

Who'd a thunk that Estelle would turn up four years after her debut single where she sang about the virtues of 1980 "the year that god made me!" with one of the coolest Soul/R&B albums of 2008? Not us, that's for sure.

It seems that after initial success and a self-confessed "quarterlife crisis", our girl has come out the other side with album "Shine" boasting a supporting cast that includes Kanye West, John Legend and Cee-Lo. Turns out that Estelle's been busy meeting and greeting in the intervening years, buffing up her contacts, polishing up her songwriting and touring with John Legend to perfect her sound.

That Estelle had to relocate to NYC to get her big break is a grim reflection on a UK record industry that ain't exactly overflowing with homegrown soul/R&B acts, but it's her who's had the last laugh, landing in the arrivals lounge with a crisply executed soul sound that's heavy on reggae with a dash of hip-hop delicately added.
