Elisa
Born Elisa Toffoli in Monfalcone in 1977, Elisa is widely considered to have one of the finest voices in Italian popular music and is also the only major Italian singer to write and record in English. The latter trait presumably stems from the time she spent developing her music in Berkeley, California, with super-producer Corrado Rustici, who picked her up after she signed for the Sugar label aged 17.
Debut album Pipes & Flowers (1997) spawned three hit singles, went triple platinum and saw Elisa bag a brace of top Italian music awards -- the Targa Tenco and the Premio Italiano della Musica. Since then Elisa has released five further LPs -- Asile's World, Then Comes The Sun, Elisa, Lotus and Pearl Days -- but only topped her debut sales-wise with greatest hits package Soundtrack '96-'06 (2006).
