Don Cherry's musical style on the trumpet helped make him an influence in jazz music during the middle of the 20th century. He is probably best known for his long time friendship and collaboration with tenor saxophonist Ornette Coleman. On “The Avant-Garde” sessions, Don Cherry played alongside fellow Ornette Coleman's quartet members Charlie Haden (bass), Ed Blackwell (drums), and jazz legend John Coltrane. The album was regarded as an influential work in both Coltrane’s and Cherry’s careers. The album was originally released in 1960 and then digitally re-mastered and re-released in 2000.
