The black metal outfit Darkthrone formed in Oslo, Norway in 1986 under the name Black Death, but changed their name before they released their debut album, “Soulside Journey”, in 1990. Smearing their faces with white paint to give the sheer evilness of their music a visual kick, the band also adopted fantasy names like Nocturno Culto in an attempt to make Goth girlies shudder. Their 1991 album “Ablaze in the Northern Sky” is considered one of the best examples of the black metal genre. Further offerings by the fearsome ones included “Transylvanian Hunger” (1994) and “Hate Them” (2004).
