Formed in 1991, Candlebox capitalized on the growing attention grunge music was attracting at the time. With a more accessible style that smoothed out grunge with classic rock elements, Candlebox's 1993 self-titled debut came out on Maverick and was one of the first "post-grunge" successes. Seattle purists slammed their style, which lacked the more aggressive punk and indie elements that had defined grunge. The bad press hurt, and market saturation took its toll. Later albums, 1995's "Lucy" and 1998's "Happy Pills", recieved little media attention and the band's lineup grew instable.
