Singer Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek formed London band Bronski Beat in 1983. Their first single "Smalltown Boy" was an immediate success, reaching the top of the US dance charts and number 3 on the UK pop chart. The album "The Age of Consent" was heralded for its combination of compelling songwriting and club-friendly pop. The songs focussed on singer Jimmy Somerville's experiences as a young gay man. He left the group one year later and they continued with vocalist John Jon, releasing "Truthdare Doubledare" in 1986.
