Bert Kaempfert may well be the most successful German composer of the 20th century. Born in 1923, he was already an established bandleader with hits for Freddy Quinn, when in 1959 his lush instrumental "Wonderland by Night" went No.1 in the US pop charts. A commercial jazzman by heart, he went on to write classics such as "Strangers in the Night" for Frank Sinatra and "L-O-V-E" for Nat King Cole. Back in Hamburg, Kaempfert also gave the Beatles their first break, recording them as the backing band for Tony Sheridan. He died at age 56.
