Arnold von Bruck

Music > Classical > Arnold von Bruck
(b. Bruges, ?1500; d. Linz, 6 Feb 1554).
Netherlands composer. He was a choirboy in Charles V's chapel until c. 1519 and became Kapellmeister at Archduke Ferdinand I's court in 1527. Having received a number of ecclesiastical honours, he retired in 1545, moving to Vienna then to Linz. He is one of the most important composers who worked in German lands in the first half of the 16th century. Sacred and secular German lieder predominate among his extant works, but his surviving Latin church compositions show him a master of liturgical cantus firmus treatment. The sacred German songs reflect the move towards the later motet-style chorales, but the secular songs (polyphonic arrangements of folksongs and court melodies, and quodlibets) are his greatest achievement.
