The rock quartet The American Breed developed in Cicero, Illinois back in the sixties out of the Ashes of the earlier soul outfit Gary & the Knight Lites. Let by Gary Loizzo (born on August 16, 1945) the outfit released its self-titled debut album in the year 1967 and had a Top Ten hit with the song “Bend Me, Shape Me”, taken from their1968 full-length release of the same title. Unable to follow that success up with another hit the band added a female singer, reverted their sound to soul and transformed into the outfit Rufus, which was soon to be fronted by Chaka Khan.
