Single Minded: Al Green, Spoon and Liz Phair

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Al Green, “Love & Happiness” [Live]
Al Green apologized that his vocals here are a bit rough, claiming he was nervous. On a related note, to everyone we’ve ever done karaoke with: We were just nervous. And totally, totally off-pitch.

Spoon, “Panic” [Smiths Cover]
Respect your elders: today’s indie sweethearts pay note-perfect tribute to yesteryear’s.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, “Gbeti Madjro” [Live]
This is a bit of a cheat, because we’re not sure it’s 100% live — but how do we not post this? There’s a section in the middle where the vocalist just starts screaming in ecstasy. We know exactly how he feels.

Liz Phair, “Fuck and Run” [Live]
Little known fact: the title of this song actually comes from the name of a notorious Chicago drive-thru.

Various Artists, “Locals Only” [Beach Boys Remixes]
Pretty clever collection of Beach Boys remixes, delayed for 10 months when one of the remixers demanded a sandbox in his studio and claimed his “Red Hot Remix” may have been responsible for a small grease fire at a diner down the block.
