This veteran Canadian quartet took the "two guitars, bass and drums" formula and invented their own distinctive sound over the course of a number of albums, starting in 1987. Taking Neil Young's drifting, Roots-inflected sound (their 1991 record A Blur to Me Now was produced by longtime Young collaborator, the late David Briggs) and the wryly poetic lyrics of Lou Reed, 13 Engines meld them with a passing nod to Mott the Hoople-style Glam and thorny, melodic Power Pop. The band sometimes seems like a jaundiced Badfinger, with more pointed lyrics and less exquisite vocal harmonies.
